A pool villa by the coast

A courtyard of tiled-roof rooms around a pool that's lit after dark, minutes from the coast. Two rooms are held from the moment you arrive, before check-in.

Day 01 · the route

The backwater by morning, the horse safari by evening

A morning spur north to Padubidri while the backwater is still calm, the afternoon to sleep off the overnight drive, then back out to Sasihithlu for the horses and the long shallow beach.

1 Padubidri Beach 2 Sasihithlu ARABIAN SEA N ↑ 2 STOPS
Schematic — relative positions only, not to scale
  1. Padubidri Blue-Flag Beach & the Shambhavi backwater
Kayaking and boating first, while the backwater behind the sand is calm, then the beach — one of India's first eight Blue-Flag beaches. The certified stretch has a gated entry. If the operators favour it, the paddle moves across the river to Mulki.
  2. Check in at the villa
Lunch is on you, then a long rest — you were on the road all night.
  3. Beach horse safari at Sasihithlu
Horse riding on the sand, and the wide shallow stretch where the Shambhavi and Nandini meet the sea.
  4. The pool, after dark
Back at the villa for a swim, pool games and the lawn. Dinner is on you.

Day 02 · the route

North to the delta, south for Dasara

Check out after breakfast and drive north to the river mouth, then Udupi's silver window, the tiger dance at Uchila and the lighthouse at Kapu, before turning south for ice cream and Kudroli lit for Dasara.

  1. Bengre Delta Point
A long sand spit where the Swarna river meets the Arabian Sea — still estuary on one side, surf on the other, fishing boats in between. Free, and never gated.
  2. Krishna Matha, Udupi
Krishna seen through a nine-holed silver window, and the older Anantheshwara temple beside it on Car Street. Lunch is the Matha's own prasada or a banana-leaf thali nearby.
  3. Pilivesha dancers in tiger paint drumming through a Mangaluru street at Dasara
    Huli vesha at Uchila
The tiger dance — paint, drums and leaps down the street, in the middle of the Dasara days. Lunch is taken on the way here.
  4. Sunset at Kapu Lighthouse & Beach
The 1901 lighthouse on a black-rock headland, climbable only in its short evening window — which is what fixes this slot. You are up there for the sunset, with the coast running away on both sides.
  5. Ideal Cafe, Hampankatta
Home of the original Gadbad — ice cream, fruit and jelly layered in a tall glass. Forty-five minutes for snacks, on you.
  6. Witness the Navaratri celebration at Kudroli
Gold-roofed and lit end to end after dark. In Navaratri this is the stage for the Mangaluru Dasara, and the lanes around it stay busy late into the night.
  7. Leave for Bengaluru
Dinner on the road, on you. You reach home the next morning.
